What means Cyber Bullying?

Cyberbullying is the use of the Internet, cell phones, or other electronic communication devices to spread harmful or embarrassing information about another person. This information can be in the form of text, photos, or videos. Internet safety organizations make a distinction between cyber bullying and cyber harrassment. The latter terms refers to harassing behaviors targeted at adults. The term cyber bullying refers to the behavior when it is targeted at minors.

Rebuttal

On the other hand, According to Kari Henley "While new Internet-based networking sites can be challenging for all users, children and teenagersmight not yet have the maturity to use them properly, hurting friends and fellow studentsunintentionally. child's brain does not have the capabilities to properly navigate the dangers ofFacebook and MySpace, and parents need to be involved in their teenagers' social networkingactivities to ensure everyone's safety."

History and Facts

Cyber bullying was born with the invention of technology and accessibility that has the entire world to this. cyberbullying is known as the way that teenagers seek to intimidate others through aggressive and hurtful comments or embarrassing photos and more.  According to Jennifer Holladay "The word cyber bullying didn't even exist a decade ago, yet the problem is pervasive today. Simply put cyber bullying is the repeated use of technology to harass humiliate or threaten." (2011). Bullying has been around for many years is not a new term, but with the advancement of technology has brought the harassment to a new level giving rise to cyber-bullying which is basically harassment through electronic devices.

The following graph shows the students who  have been cyberbullied.

Internet

First reason is the anonimously that offers the internet
Analysts offer various reasons for the pervasiveness of cyberbullying. Some see the behavior as an online version of the teasing and cruelty that commonly exist in schools. Others point out that the Internet offers anonymity to bullies, while simultaneously providing them with the opportunity to reach a huge audience. Posting photos or videos, to them, can seem like a way to achieve celebrity and status.

Lack of Education

Second reason is lack of education:

According to Rachel Simmons"Education is just as critical. Most parents would not hesitate to assume responsibility for their child's behavior on playground, at school, or in someone else's home. What happens online should be nodifferent. Parents should talk with their children about computer ethics, stipulate rules of conduct, and—most importantly—establish computer consequences. They should instruct their children never to sharetheir passwords or fight with someone online."

Ignorance

The last cause is the ignorance:

According to an article of Current Issues: Macmillian Social Science Library (2010) Cyber Bullying by teens and younger kids take place out of ignorance. They simply don’t have any idea whatsoever regarding the power word can have. Sometimes to keep boredom at bay teens and younger kids initially harass, humiliate or intimidate someone to create some excitement. As parents the onus of responsibility lies on us to make them aware of the possible consequences of their actions on the lives of other people. Blame squarely lies on ourselves if we don not aware them that what seems harmless to them can actually ruin the life of others.
